There is no average contract duration. Each contract is very different. Initially an assignment may present as either a three, six or twelve month contract, although frequently these are extended and sometimes these roles become permanent opportunities.
+Can I delay starting a contract role while my visa is sorted out?
You must be able to commence employment immediately, either as a New Zealand resident or citizen, or through your legitimate working visa. The fast turnaround required means that clients are unable to wait for your visa to come through, as they may be able to do when dealing with permanent employment. +Will I be able to grow into a contract I'm placed in?
Clients are not usually in a position to groom you into a contract role. The nature of contracting is such that you need to have suitable previous experience and knowledge to be able to hit the ground running from the commencement of your contract.
+What if I have to work out a four week notice period before I can start a contract?
Due to the immediacy of the contract market, it is very difficult for us to place candidates who need to work out a notice period of four weeks, into a contract position. The exception to this may be for longer term 12 month contracts. For a contract assignment you will often interview for a role and start in the following days/week.
+Can I finish up my contract early?
Every contract has a termination period, however to ensure the best outcome for all parties, and a positive reputation for the contractor, you do need to commit to the total duration of the contract.
+What happens if the client asks me to stay longer in my assignment or go permanent?

+What is a Fixed Term Contract?
In some cases the client will take a contractor on a fixed term arrangement. In this situation you are issued with a contract from the client and you effectively become an employee of the client’s for a fixed period of time. You are paid as part of the client's payroll so there is no further need for timesheets through Gaulter Russell.
+Do I get holidays?
As a contractor you are allowed to take holidays, although these will need to be agreed upfront with your hiring manager. Contractors are not entitled to paid holidays or paid public holidays.

+What can I expect in terms of an hourly rate?
Gaulter Russell get the best possible rates for our contractors taking into account the market rate for your skill set and the client’s budget. You will come to an agreement with your consultant on the rate you wish to be represented at for each role prior to your CV being represented to the client.
+Do I get paid overtime?
Upon presentation of an authorised timesheet, you will be paid for every hour that you work at the agreed hourly rate. You do not get paid overtime.
+How do I know if my timesheet has been received?
Timesheets and invoices are due fortnightly by 10.00am on a Monday for all hours worked in the prior fortnightly period. The most fail-safe method of submitting your client authorised timesheet and invoice to us is by fax or email. As part of our process we will endeavour to give you one follow up call or email if we discover that your information is missing. However, the onus is on you to ensure that your timesheets and invoices reach us by the designated deadlines in order for us to make payment to you.
+What if I haven't had to use an invoice before?
If you have not contracted before and require an invoice template we are happy to provide a copy for you. This is also available on our 'downloads' page.
+What happens if I incur expenses on behalf of the client?
Subject to prior agreement and sign off from the client, you will be reimbursed either directly by the client (or via Gaulter Russell) on presentation of all required supporting documentation.
+When do I get paid?
You will be paid fortnightly upon submission of a client authorised timesheet and an invoice created by you. Click here for the payment schedule.
You must register for GST if your annual turnover for the previous 12 month period has exceeded $60,000 or if you expect that your turnover will exceed $60,000 within the next 12 month period or if you charge GST in your prices. In the case of the latter you must register even if your turnover is less than $60,000. Refer to the IRD www.ird.govt.nz or your Accountant for further information.
+Who pays my taxes?
As an independent contractor you are solely responsible for all taxes in respect of the services you provide. This includes but is not limited to ACC levies, income tax, GST (if applicable) and all other liabilities whatsoever. You must make these payments as required to the IRD or other such agencies. Refer to either the IRD or your Accountant for further information.
