Grads – Make the Most Out of Working With a Recruiter

As you know, the transition from university to full-time employment is not always a smooth one. Searching for your first “real” job can feel like a pain-staking and meticulous process, often accompanied with a pile of rejection letters. Working with a recruitment consultant can make this process a whole lot easier. Why? Recruitment consultants often have strong, trusted relationships with their clients, i.e. your future employer; therefore a recommendation from a recruitment consultant can ensure your application makes its way to the top of the application pile.  Further, one application with a recruiter opens you up to a myriad of roles due to the number of positions they are handling at any one time.  Make the most of partnering with a consultant with these quick tips:

Highlighting work experience

Many people cringe at the thought of unpaid work experience or volunteering, but it offers a wealth of benefits.  Employers like to know that candidates are motivated and passionate about the industry.  There is no better way to show your passion for the industry than with experience, regardless of whether it is unpaid or paid.

Perfecting your resume

In your resume, it is important to demonstrate that you fit the job requirements by providing examples of past experiences that show off the required skills.  Recruiters love stats, so your statements should be backed up with numerical data, where possible.

When identifying past experiences, think broadly. Consider past assignments at university, extracurricular activities and part-time work. As a graduate, you probably feel that you lack experience in your industry, which is why it is important to highlight transferable skills in your CV. Your time as a Countdown check-out operator? That was time spent developing your communication skills. Counting money at the till? Think of that as time spent honing your attention to detail.

And lastly, proofread! There is no better way to disprove that attention to detail claim than having spelling and grammatical errors in your work. Often when proofreading, we read what we think we have written, so if possible, take a break and check over your application with fresh eyes.

Update your LinkedIn

People with completed profiles are 40 times more likely to receive job opportunities through LinkedIn than those with incomplete profiles, so make sure yours is as complete as possible.  Be sure to use a professional looking profile picture and that your LinkedIn mirrors your resume, with no inconsistencies between the two.  Lastly, being in a recruiter’s network increases the likelihood of them spotting your profile, and identifying you as a potential candidate.  Are you in ours?  https://www.linkedin.com/company/68696?trk=tyah&trkInfo=clickedVertical%3Acompany%2CclickedEntityId%3A68696%2Cidx%3A2-1-2%2CtarId%3A1463714955537%2Ctas%3Agaulter (Gaulter Russell) https://www.linkedin.com/company/2732561?trk=tyah&trkInfo=clickedVertical%3Acompany%2CclickedEntityId%3A2732561%2Cidx%3A2-2-5%2CtarId%3A1463714986069%2Ctas%3Anumero%20 (Numero)
