How did you get into recruitment?
After university I spent about 5 years working as a lawyer, including time in the UK. It was there that I had my first exposure to recruiters - and I was always far more interested in their roles than the ones they were putting me forward for! On returning to NZ I decided it was the perfect time for a career change and was lucky enough to get a role with a broader HR consultancy who really invested in training and development and gave me a great foundation to build on.
What do you love most about being a Recruitment Consultant?
It’s a cliché, but I really do love the people aspect to what I do! As unpredictable as we can all be, that’s what makes it interesting and keeps us all on our toes! But the commercial side also provides such a great balance. The exposure and insight you get into so many different businesses, understanding what they’re trying to achieve and how the people piece fits into achieving their commercial objectives is something I really enjoy. Truly consulting to your clients and feeling you’re really adding value to their businesses through their people decisions can be very satisfying!
What types of roles are in hot demand right now?
Good roles are always in demand at a senior level and demand often outweighs supply. People are always looking for interesting, challenging roles where they can really add value, but often smaller, more entrepreneurial businesses really appeal - particularly for people who’ve had big corporate careers but have reached a stage where they’re just ready for a change and somewhere where they feel they can truly have more ownership and make an impact. And the potential for equity is always high on the wish list!
What advice would you give to a job seeker?
At a senior level the market can be tough with fewer opportunities and lots of competition. Don’t get disheartened, just make sure you understand the realities of the market you’re in and be realistic about the likely timeframes for securing that role that you really want. Also don’t be afraid to be open to opportunities that at first glance might not be ‘perfect’ for you - sometimes they might surprise you once you dig that little bit deeper. And make sure you do your market research first, should you decide to resign before securing a new role! But above all keep the faith, and don’t lose your confidence if you get a few knockbacks - you’re not alone and you will get there!
What do you look for in a candidate? What qualities really stand out to you?
Talent will always be in demand... whatever level you are! Having the right technical skills for a role is only part of the equation though, often the softer skills are even more important. It’s about EQ as well as IQ, so your attitude, your interpersonal skills, your leadership and influencing ability are what will set you apart… both positively and negatively!
